This chapter discusses the arguments in favor of gene therapy research, the arguments against gene therapy research, general societal concerns regarding gene therapy, and the American approach to gene therapy research regulation.
Ethical issues in genetic therapy involve the use of genetic science for human good and the avoidance of preventable harms. Immediate issues are the control and confidentiality of results of genetic testing, possible discrimination against those found to have genetic diseases, and the just allocation of beneficial genetic therapies.
Germ line gene therapy will require major advances in our present knowledge and it raises ethical issues that are now being debated. In order to provide guidelines for determining when germ line gene therapy would be ethical, the author presents three criteria which should be satisfied prior to the time that a clinical protocol is attempted in humans. Enhancement genetic engineering presents
requirements and the ethical issues associated with each type are discussed. Somatic cell gene therapy is technically the simplest and ethically the least controversial. The first clinical trials will probably be undertaken within the next year. Germ line gene therapy will require major advances in our present knowledge and it raises ethical issues that are now being debated. In order to
Gene Therapy and Medical Ethics Gene Therapy or Genetic treatment using gene modifications is a new method for therapy and prevention of genetic and inheritable diseases in humans. The main idea in gene therapy is the delivery of a healthy gene to the genome of a person with a specific disease.
ETHICAL QUESTIONS SURROUNDING GENE THERAPY• How can “good” and “bad” uses of gene therapy be distinguished?• Who decides which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or disorder?• Will the therapy only benefit the wealthy due to its high cost?• Could the widespread use of gene therapy make the society less accepting of people who are different?• Should people be
Experimentation is an ongoing process with gene therapy. Ethical issues are something that has been accompanying the procedure since it has been used. New facts on gene therapy continue to be uncovered as we speak. To start off, an overview of why people need gene therapy should be covered. Each of us carries about half a dozen defective genes. However, we remain ignorant to this fact …
Regulatory, legal and ethical questions. The techniques of ST and PNT described herein induce permanent changes to mtDNA that would be transmitted through generations, thus qualifying as germline gene therapy.

In general, current efforts to treat disease by somatic gene therapy do not pose any novel ethical issues, provided there is proper enforcement of informed consent in trials. There is concern, however, about where the successful development of techniques for germline gene therapy might lead.

Gene therapy holds great promise for treating cancer, inherited disorders, and other diseases. Gene therapy, also often referred to as ‘gene transfer,’ uses carriers called ‘vectors’ to deliver
Gene therapy research and its clinical application raise a large number of ethical, legal, and social questions. Many of these are discussed in Nordgren’s anthology. The contributions come from a number of different disciplines, including bioethics, genetics, social science, and theology. The book
Gene therapy in human beings raises a variety of important ethical, legal and social issues. Somatic gene therapy (SGT) is similar to other forms of medical treatment in that the goal is to treat or prevent diseases in individuals.

The ethical issues in genetic therapy actually are issues of the use of the science that provides the foundation for this technology. Most Americans are in favor of the development of therapies that may cure genetic diseases such as hypercholesterolemia, immune system dysfunctions, or cystic fibrosis.

Margarita Arnold Group #4 Gene Therapy Ethical Issues with Gene Therapy Gene therapy is a new and experimental technique used to correct defective genes that cause diseases and genetic disorders. If gene therapy does become practical, the biggest impact would be on the treatment of diseases where the normal gene would only have to be inserted into one organ.
Gene therapy has been associated with several problems over the last few decades. One of the main issues is the lack of knowledge about the long-term effects of the therapy and the field is
This two-part paper discusses moral and ethical questions raised by future trials of human fetal gene therapy. The first part examines broad moral issues to explore whether fetal gene therapy is a morally praiseworthy goal.

ethical issues, particularly when used in human embryos. In this paper we examine some of the ethical objections that have been raised against germline gene editing. We distinguish between objections that centre on the use of human embryos for gene editing research, which we discuss in Part 2, and objections concerning the non-research applications of germline gene editing, which we discuss in
Although gene therapy is still in its infancy as a clinically useful therapeutic modality, a discussion of the ethical issues is useful in several respects because it involves ethical principles of broad applicability in clinical medicine. Furthermore, many current applications of genetic engineering in medicine (DNA vaccines, therapeutic use of encapsulated genetically modified cells) are
Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. Gene therapy is designed to introduce genetic material into cells to compensate for abnormal genes or to make a beneficial protein.

There are three sequential steps to gene therapy: first, the partial removal of a patient’s cells, second, the introduction of normal, functional copies of the gene via vectors to replace defective cells in the patient, and finally, the reintroduction of the modified cells into the patient once the genes have been fixed in their vectors (Gardner et al. 1991).
